The big move
13/01/07 – Saturday
Today is the big day. Zain and I move into our new apartment (or unit as it is called here). I am so excited. It has been too long. I know you will find it hard to imagine that you could get bored living in hotels and all that, but really, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be; sometimes you just want your own space, your own bed and your own things. Well today we get that.
Both of us packed up last night and then were early to rise this morning to get everything together and then do a few last minute things in the CBD before hailing a cab to move our stuff to North Sydney where the unit is. You would be amazed to see how much stuff in just over a week we have accumulated – we have even been to IKEA!! The cab journey over was something special. Get in the cab, ‘Where are you going?’, ‘To St Leonards, right beside North Shore Hospital’, ‘ Where is that?’. Like Hello!!! Aren’t you a taxi driver? Don’t you know your own city!? St Leonards isn’t even that far out of town!! So after we map read (we really did that!) and told the cabbie where to go, we arrived at our new destination. Address to follow in emails! If you don’t get it soon, then email me and I will let you know…
Got the keys and moved in. The unit smelt slightly of wet dog as the carpets had been freshly washed for us moving in (they are really big on that here, making sure that the flat is tip top before you move in). So quickly dropped off the bags, because as this flat is unfurnished, that means nothing – no bed, no sofa, nothing in the kitchen – Yikes!
So off into town we went to get white goods leased up to the max and then the quest for a bed/blow up began…Thankfully we didn’t have to go too far as we found a wee camping shop with just the thing for us – a queen sized blow up with pump for the equivalent of about £30. Sweet! If only getting everything else for your house was as easy as that! Had a look round the resistant Sally Army (which they call Salvos here and they have sooooooo many of them. When I asked the man about delivery for items – which they don’t do – I even got a run down of their religious affiliations and where else we could go and what religion that charity shop was based on. Too far!) Some of the stuff in Salvos was ok, but as we don’t have wheels, we are at a serious disadvantage and basically we are having to public transport ourselves everywhere, which is totally fine, but very difficult with desk and chair in tow! So we keep looking. Ended the day by looking for a proper bed without breaking the bank, easier said than done, so the quest continues tomorrow.
Then headed back into town for a celebratory dinner, which Zain’s sister Siara had kindly paid for for Christmas – you dancer!! Had a lovely dinner at a restaurant called Cruise which sits directly opposite from the Sydney Opera House and we had a window view which was fabulous and we got to watch the sun set behind the opposite shore. The food was delicious and we even got a specially concocted cocktail from the bar man who was from Scotland – vodka and irn bru! Only joking about the irn bru of course. Did get a special cocktail as quote unquote “Stuart doesn’t like to be restricted by a cocktail menu, he will make one just for you”. Way to go Stuart. Someday people will say that about me…”Isla doesn’t like to be restricted by the price of shoes, she just takes whatever!” As if.
Cheerio, X
Observations:
IKEA – you have got to love it and hate it in equal measure, so much easier than hunting around town and pretty much equals out in price.
